Tsar Bomba was russias answer to sophisticated american targeting of their bombs.

What the russians lacked in high technology aiming equpment they made up for with Yield. (It doesent matter if you miss by 10 miles if the bomb destroys everything for 50 miles say).

There was a fear that the bomb was so powerful it could crack the crust of the earth, so instead of its 100Mega Ton design it was about half that (to give you an idea the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombs were between 10-20 Megatons).
